There is no single "best" marine collagen for everyone. There is a best one for your budget and your routine, and you can find it in five minutes with a label and a calculator.
The 6-point checklist
1. Grams of collagen per serving
Human studies on collagen peptides used 2.5 g to 10 g a day. If a product does not state its collagen in grams (or milligrams) per serving, move on. If it states 500 mg, it is well below the studied range, however good the packaging looks.
2. Hydrolysed peptides, and the source
Look for "hydrolysed collagen" or "collagen peptides", meaning the protein has been broken into smaller pieces that dissolve in water. Marine collagen comes from fish, so it is not suitable for vegetarians or people with a fish allergy, and the pack should say so clearly.
3. Every dose printed. No proprietary blend
A "proprietary blend" lets a brand list a long ingredient list with one combined weight, so you cannot tell how much of each is inside. If you are paying for six ingredients, you should be able to see the dose of all six. (More on proprietary blends here.)
4. Vitamin C alongside it
Vitamin C is required for your body's normal collagen formation. It is one of the few supporting nutrients with a clear, well-established role, so it is a sensible thing to see on the label.
5. Sugar and taste
You need to take it daily for 8–12 weeks, so it has to taste good enough to keep going, without turning into a sweet drink. Check the sugar per serving, not just the flavour name.
6. Real cost per gram of collagen
This is where most comparisons go wrong. Don't compare pack prices; compare rupees per gram of collagen.
Cost per gram = pack price ÷ (servings × grams of collagen per serving)
A worked example
Here is the maths using our own product, so you can see exactly how to do it for any other brand:
| Pack | Price | Collagen in pack | Cost per gram |
|---|---|---|---|
| Super Glow, 14 sachets | ₹999 | 14 × 5 g = 70 g | ₹14.3 |
| Super Glow, 28 sachets | ₹1,899 | 28 × 5 g = 140 g | ₹13.6 |
Now do the same for any product you are considering. A pack that looks cheaper on the shelf can easily cost more per gram once you account for a smaller dose per serving.
One caution: cost per gram compares quantity, not everything else. Two products can differ in the type and size of collagen peptides, the other ingredients and the evidence behind them. Use cost per gram to filter, then compare the full label.
Other things worth a 10-second check
- FSSAI licence number printed on the pack.
- Manufacturer and marketer named, with an address.
- Allergen statement (marine collagen contains fish).
- How to use, including how much water. If it doesn't tell you, it hasn't been thought through.
